Tritel to Rolls Out New Generation Payphones With CDMA technology Targets the setting up of 40,000 more payphones within the next three years 16th February 2006, Colombo – Tritel Services (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka’s largest payphone operator is poised to take off with country’s first new generation payphones enabled by CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. Tritel will use a slot on the 450 MHz band that enables broader and wider reach, which can provide CDMA connectivity to more interior rural locations. At present island wide network testing is in progress by the TRC on behalf of Tritel. The company has a target of expanding its network by 40,000 payphones and public phone facilities by end of year 2009. Presently, there are almost 5000 Tritel payphone booths public phone facilities operating across the island and owns the credit of being the only payphone company operating in Jaffna. “The fact that every person in this country cannot afford to have a residential phone should not hinder them in enjoying the facility of telecommunication. We have been granted with the TRC CDMA licence which enables us to provide payphone facilities to the less affluent rural community. Thus, we are passionate and committed in providing payphone facilities to all the rural communities within the next three years” said Mr. Darryll Sinnappa, CEO of Tritel. The phone units of new generation payphones will be custom designed and manufactured in Malaysia as per to Tritel specifications with more features and benefits including minimized coin jam, faster connectivity and clarity. The latest phone units will also carry more features such as SMS, voice mail and more futuristic services to be made available to public in the future. The new payphone booths will also have a totally new brand identity painted in deep yellow for better visibility during day and night. The booths are developed and designed locally out of fibreglass to suit the market and environmental needs of the country.
